Here are some additional questions to ask potential candidates:
- What is your experience with projects similar to mine?
- What is your process for working with clients?
- What are your fees?
- Can you provide me with references?
- Do you have experience working with the local council?
- How do you guarantee the final construction cost will be within my budget?
- What if the final construction cost is outside my budget and I have paid for all the designs and permits?
- Who will help me when work starts on site?
- What happens if a neighbour objects to my design?
- I hear horror stories about builders going bust during a project – how can I guarantee that doesn’t happen to me?
- Why should I use you and not a volume builder?
- Why should I use you and not a builder who offers their own inhouse design?
By asking these questions, you can get a better sense of the candidate’s qualifications and experience. You can also get a feel for their personality and style to see if they are a good fit for your project.
It is important to meet with your architect or draftsman. You need to connect. This person will be working closely with you on your new home. This is a personal journey and there must be trust between both parties. If the connection is not there, maybe this business relationship is not for you. It happens. The same is important between you and your chosen builder.
